Raúl Gorrín: Successful Story of Christopher Gardner

Do you buy the idea that poverty is a function of bad luck and bad choices, and success the result of heroic toil and dreams?  Christopher Gardner has quoted these words time and time again as a motivational speaker. He is an American entrepreneur, investor, stockbroker, motivational speaker and philanthropist. Gardner established the brokerage firm, Gardner Rich and company in Chicago, an "institutional brokerage firm specializing in the execution of debt, equity and derivative products transactions for some of the nation’s largest institutions, public pension plans and unions.

After Gardner sold his small stake in Gardner Rich in a multi-million dollar deal in 2006, he became CEO and founder of Christopher Gardner International Holdings, with offices in New York, Chicago and San Francisco.  During a visit to South Africa to observe elections around the time of the 10th anniversary of the end of apartheid, Gardner met with Nelson Mandela to discuss possible investment in South African emerging markets as indicated in his 2006 autobiography. Gardner is reportedly developing an investment venture with South Africa that will create hundreds of jobs and introduce millions in foreign currency into the nation. Gardner has declined to disclose details of the project citing securities laws.

David Hawkins, author of the book titled, Power vs. Force wrote
To be a success, it’s necessary to embrace and operate from the principles that produce success, not just imitate the actions of successful people—for to really do what they do, it’s necessary to be like they are.

Successful people follow other successful people’s actions and principles and incorporate them into our own self. So let’s learn from Mr. Gardner’s actions and what made him successful.

The difference between a successful salesperson and a mediocre one often lies in the nuances of social behavior and the skills for building relationships and controlling another person’s perception. That is one of the reasons that we are told to dress for success. A stockbroker would tend to wear a rolex watch so that his client sees that sign of success. The image we give will have a direct correlation on how our potential customers accept us.

Another key to success is to learn as much as you can about your trade and to become the best at it. Gardner became friends with a Bob Bridges, who organized meetings between Gardner and branch managers at the major stock brokerage firms that offered training programs—such as Merrill Lynch, Paine Webber, E.F. Hutton, Dean Witter Reynolds and Smith Barney. Gardner returned home from jail because he could not pay for parking tickets. With no experience, no college education, virtually no connections, and with the same casual outfit he had been wearing on the day he was taken into custody, Gardner gained a position in Dean Witter Reynolds’ stock brokerage training program. However, this offered no salary; apart from selling medical equipment that brought in 300–400 dollars a month in the early 1980s, and with no savings, he was unable to meet his living expenses. Gardner worked to become a top trainee at Dean Witter Reynolds. He arrived at the office early and stayed late each day, persistently making calls to prospective clients with his goal being 200 calls per day. His perseverance paid off when, in 1982, Gardner passed his Series 7 Exam on the first try and became a full employee of the firm. Eventually, Gardner was recruited by Bear Stearns & Company in San Francisco.

Meanwhile, none of Gardner's co-workers knew that he and his son were homeless in the Tenderloin District of San Francisco for nearly a year. Gardner often scrambled to place his child in daycare, stood in soup kitchens and slept wherever he and his son could find safety—in his office after hours, at flophouses, motels, parks, airports, on public transport and even in a locked bathroom at a BART station.

Regardless of his challenges, he never reveals his lowly circumstances to his colleagues, even going so far as to lend one of his bosses five dollars for cab fare, a sum that he cannot afford. Perception was that important to Gardner. He also made sure to wear nice suits and pressed shirts despite not having the money. He would give up food to look good at an internship in which he was not paid. On the last day of his internship, his boss complimented his clothes and told him to come in wearing those impressive clothes the next day. From hundreds of others he was chosen for a full time job and was no longer a free intern.  Mr.  Gardner was to go on to make millions in that field.

Gardner was willing to work for free to learn his trade and he was willing to live in a homeless shelter to achieve his goals of being the best at what he did. He tried to learn from the very best and copy and learn from them. Lastly despite his circumstance o being homeless and living in shelters, his outside image to his bosses and clients was one of incredible success by Raúl Gorrín.

Raúl Gorrin: Productivity means getting things done.

By Raúl Gorrín. There will be times when things are not working out well. This is in all businesses. Can you imagine a company that never had a crises or never had times when things were not working out well? The successful companies  come to terms with the situation.

“The Chinese use two brush strokes to write the word ‘crisis.’ One brush stroke stands for danger; the other for opportunity. In a crisis, be aware of the danger–but recognize the opportunity.”~John F. Kennedy
We are about to start a New Year. None of us has a crystal ball, but do we really need one? Will this be a year when our company is very successful or will this be  a year that will test what our company and what we are made of.  Will there be some obstacles that happen that we can not control happening? Will the government pass some regulations that challenge our companies survival? Will a big customer of ours change to another company that his cousin just started? We can not control these things from happening nor can we change them. Raúl Gorrín

A smart leader will adapt the philosophy of que sera sera. “Que será será” has become a proverb in English, meaning “What will be  will be”:  an expression of cheerful fatalism. Rather than connoting despair, it typically offers relief from worry about future events beyond human control. Raúl Gorrín

“Que será, será,Whatever will be, will be.The future's not ours to see,Que será, será.”

Even though no one is totally certain about what the New Year will bring, the smartest of businesspeople, say they are ready for whatever comes. The positive attitude reminds me of another catchy rhyme.  Raúl Gorrín

“As you travel on through life,Whatever be your goal,Look upon the dough nutAnd not upon the hole.”

A smart leader comes  to terms with the situation, they do not try to change what can not be changed and they accept these changes by taking measures to deal with the new circumstances and lead their companies forward. They are adjusting business models to the new circumstance, shoring up revenues and moving some of their eggs out of the present baskets.

Being an alcoholic can destroy ones life. It is an illness that one can never recover from. How does one deal with such an illness and still have a normal life? The answer for almost eighty years has been in the Serenity Prayer . Raúl Gorrín

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, Raúl Gorrín

The courage to change the things I can, And the wisdom to know the difference.

Raúl Gorrín: Rules for Focused Success in a Distracted World

By  Raúl Gorrín.  In February 1975 and Bill Gates, a Harvard sophomore , he was working on his program that would become the software behind Microsoft two months later. Nothing disturbed him, not school work or exams. He would doze off at the computer screen and wake up two hours later to continue his work. His concentration was intense. A few months later he was on his way to a multi billion dollar company. Bill Gates is the perfect example of deep work.

Deep work is a book written by Carl Newport. “Deep work is the ability to focus without distraction on a cognitively demanding task. It’s a skill that allows you to quickly master complicated information and produce better results in less time. Deep work will make you better at what you do and provide the sense of true fulfillment that comes from craftsmanship. In short, deep work is like a super power in our increasingly competitive twenty-first century economy. And yet, most people have lost the ability to go deep—spending their days instead in a frantic blur of e-mail and social media, not even realizing there’s a better way. “(Raúl Gorrín humanist entrepreneur)

Carl Newport is not suggesting that we go to the extremes of Bill Gates. He would work through the night and blocked out the rest of the world. The author suggest that we show dedication to deep work and that it requires setting aside stretches of time each week (of say an hour or two) when you work with urgency and your concentration is not disrupted by anything, not even a brief moment of daydreaming or getting up for a cup of coffee.

Examples were given in the book of Carl Jung, the psychologist,  building a stone tower in the woods to focus his mind. He spoke of a social media pioneer buying a round-trip business class ticket to Tokyo to write a book free from distraction in the air.(Raúl Gorrín humanist entrepreneur)

In the book, The Innovators by Walter Isaacson, he writes about the greatest innovative minds. He writes how Bill Gates survived by caffeine induced energy from 16 cokes a day to the happening of Apple because the “demon-driven mesmeriser” Steve Jobs. The thing they had in common was to block out the external disturbances of the world.(Raúl Gorrín humanist entrepreneur)

In conclusion, there is no need for many of our e-mails,, and Facebook and television and phone calls while we should be concentrating on our work. During work time, apply everything effort you have to give it a true and complete concentration to the cost of ignoring all the external stimulates. Deep work is making the job everything at the time we are involved. ( Raúl Gorrín humanist entrepreneur)

Raul Gorrín: What are the key planning factors for competitive success in business?

By Raul Gorrín. To succeed in business you must create a plan with goals and objectives and then be willing to execute that plan through a phased implementation schedule. There are several key planning factors for competitive success in business. To be able to stay ahead of competition, you need to convert each of the factors of the business plan into an executed action.

When creating your business plan, should be focused on key areas of your business. According to Birnbaum Associates, consultants in business strategy, a business plan must be based on specific issues. Propose for example that you want to increase revenue by 10 percent annually during the first three years of business. You must use this target as a general statement and then create lists specific actions that will help you achieve that goal. You will not be able to compete in the field if only raises general terms in a business plan.

Market share

Capturing market share is one of the most important factors of a business plan. You and your competition are trying to reach the same goal. To succeed you need to have some element that helps set you apart from the competition. Try to find out the areas where product support, features, and product updates are relevant to your industry. Look what their comparative advantages are in relation to other companies that are competing in their sector, and create your advantage, it can be based on pricing strategy, product availability and online support.

Customer service

One of the key planning factors in customer retention and maintaining a high rating on consumers is a good customer service. An efficient customer service does not happen by accident; It is the result of careful planning. Create a training program that will allow your customer service representatives to continually hone their skills. It is advisable to develop a survey system that allows you to reach your customers and ask them important questions about areas such as product support, delivery or satisfaction guarantee. To stay ahead of competition, you need to know what your customers expect and how you can keep them satisfied.

Raúl Gorrín: How to manage time crisis and maintain productivity?

By Raul Gorrín. The human ability to manage time is one of the most valuable things we have as it helps us succeed. In the assessment of effective time management we must ask two questions: What if you use the money from your company and your savings in the same way you use your time? When was the last time you scheduled a review of the allocation of time?

Many entrepreneurs often characterized by the absence of effective time management experience many difficulties in meeting at the last minute, deadlines, meetings or deliveries reporting. This type of disorganization generally produces a crisis management leading to excessive tension, poor work performance and low productivity. If this happens on your agenda, you should take immediate action to prevent things from getting worse, affecting the health of your company and yourself.

Experts say that poor time management is often a symptom of overconfidence. It is recommended that the techniques used successfully to work with small projects and allow complete them, can be used to tackle the rest of the task, and even, if they work, apply to the fulfillment of the daily agenda.

Importantly, demands, problems and earnings to increase efficiency increase as you grow your responsibility. To keep your productivity up, you must learn to apply appropriate techniques. Otherwise you can be overcome by those who use their time more productively and efficiently. Perhaps the reason why time management is so little practiced is because of how few times the evaluation and review of staff performance occurs. Studies show that many people are not able to establish differences that can occur between organization and proper planning and effective time management.

Personal time management has many facets. It is not the simple concept of keeping a well-ordered daily agenda and the idea related to the well-crafted planned activities. The issue goes beyond these requirements. Effective time management is a tool for systematizing its influence on events. Successful management also depends on many other qualities such as effective delegation and project planning. By Raúl Gorrín.

The personal time management is a set of tools that allow you to:

Eliminate waste
Be prepared for meetings
Refuse excessive workloads
The Project Progress Monitor
Allocate resources (time) appropriate to the importance of a task
Ensure that long-term projects are not neglected
Plan each day efficiently
Plan each week effectively
Do a little self-discipline.

By Raúl Gorrín.
