Raul Gorrín: Lean Management and Productivity

By Raul Gorrín. Companies that have introduced in recent years the scheme teamwork, profit center or flat hierarchies, have been able to increase productivity in a sustainable manner.

This shows a recent study by the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW). The study is based on data representative of the IAB Establishment Panel that examined responses from more than 8,000 European companies.

In Europe, more and more companies are introducing Lean Management approach or management structures reduced size, which means changing the responsibility down (flat hierarchies). It involves carrying teamwork or create operational units with their own cost and with its own analysis of the results (profit center).

Based on Lean Management -model-based management to create flow to deliver maximum value for customers, using the resources necessary-lows firms organize the participation of employees in small groups, which are allowing decisions to increase motivation and efficiency. This means that the responsible for implementing the lean management should focus on a productive area of the company and consult the views of the workers themselves who perform these processes. Thus, you can go by locating all those details that do not correspond, then edit and delete. This management means better performance, more profit, better quality of life, low risk rates and reduced accident rates.

The system increases the efficiency of the processes of decision-making and production. The ZEW study shows that companies can actually increase productivity with the introduction of Lean Management in their working structures.

The Lean Management requires employees to be flexible and responsible. In companies where this method is adopted, the processes should be developed through open schemes, making knowledgeable workers an essential element in determining and applying these models.

The study also shows that companies that introduce Lean Management is clearly distinguishable from the companies that manage their systems in traditional ways.

The logic behind this business system is to produce what the market requires, in quantity, at the right, put in the right place at the right cost and time. In short, it is to produce more with less. It is not just workers, but all the resources involved in the production line. By Raúl Gorrín.
